The State of New Jersey mandates that each municipality have a Board of Health to serve its residents. There are several types of Boards which are determined by the population of the municipality and whether the municipality belongs to a central Health Department such as we do - The Sussex County Department of Health, Public Safety & Senior Services. It is the duty of the local Board of Health to maintain files of each and every permit issued by the Sussex County Health Department on behalf of the Township for a well or septic system. Keeping these files in the Municipal Building is a convenience to the residents who might need to retrieve a copy of their individual well or septic permits.

We also issue yearly food handler licenses to all the businesses in the Township that serve or handle food. The Sussex County Health Department will inspect these businesses after we notify them that they have renewed their license each year. Another area of responsibility is hosting and running the yearly free rabies clinic. These clinics are supported by the State Health Department which provides the vaccine at no cost to the Township. The Township does provide for the Veterinarian to administer the shots. The Board Members participate by issuing the rabies certificates to the dog and cat owners.

The Secretary of the Board of Health is responsible for keeping the files that contain copies of all correspondence sent and received. We also schedule monthly meetings where the members of the Board of Health meet to review the correspondence received and sent and any issues that are considered related to Board of Health issues. The Secretary takes minutes of each monthly meeting. For each monthly meeting the Secretary prepares a packet that is sent to each member that contains the minutes of the previous meeting along with a meeting agenda for the current meeting.

The Andover Township Board of Health meets on the third Wednesday of the month during the months of January through May and September through December at 7:30 p.m. at the Municipal Building.
